My Broken Femur-How it Happened?

On an evening of February 2012, I began playing basketball. I have to admit here that I have never been into sports in my whole life. It was here in Infosys that I took up squash as well. Considering this fact, I assume my body and muscles were not up for the rigorous pace and activity required for such sports. I was managing well for almost four months. There used to be minor injuries- broken fingers, bleeding nose, swelled lips. But all within the pain threshold.

However, on an unfortunate evening of May 17, 2012, when the clock timed 8:08PM, a life-altering mishap occurred. Most of the people had left for the day. There were just six of us playing. I had come late to the gym and to play. It had been just one hour. So i decided to take the 9:15PM bus. I was chasing the ball, just whisked out of my hands. And suddenly i felt something shift in my left thigh. My first thought was that some vein had moved. I lost balance and fell face-forward but managed to break the fall somewhat with my palms. I turned over and sat on the ground whining in acute pain. Everyone present had the same thought. The game had to be stopped. I could bend my knees. But i simply couldn't lie down. I started whimpering in pain. The people present asked me to try and stand up, so that there would be blood circulation. They tried lifting me up. And bang! Something snapped. A sharp pain shot in my thigh. Like something broke. I crumpled down on the ground, my left leg bent inwards at an odd angle. No tears came. Only pain. A physical agony so excruciating that all I could do was scream my lungs out.

Sense prevailed and a decision to call the ambulance was made. Everyone put me on the stretcher and loaded me into the ambulance. My first experience at that. and I was taken to the campus dispensary. Even a slight movement sent spasms of misery through my leg. The medical officer asked that i should be brought into the clinic. Another shriek from me! I couldn't move for God's sake! He came after much delay. His assistant injected a painkiller in the bloodstream and I was asked to be taken to the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Chinchwad, Pune. The journey was one of the most horrendous excursion of my life. Every bump, every brake resulted in a shivering yelp.

Once there, at the emergency entrance, i was put on the hospital gurney and taken to the emergency ward. While i waited, i heard there was a small kid brought in too. And then I heard the nurses yelling out that there is a dislocation emergency case. I prayed that wouldn't be me. But alas! My mind went dizzy. A dislocation!!!! And i hadn't even fallen down! I was next taken for x-ray. Another cruel moment. Multiple sheets were put beneath me and i was lifted onto the x-ray table. The x-ray confirmed the worst.

The normal procedure to treat a dislocation is to give anesthesia to the patient and perform manual relocation. Since i had eaten less than six hours ago, I could not be administered full anesthesia. So a decision of half-anesthesia-manual-relocation was made. The process started. I doubt the anesthesia was administered at all. I bore the brunt of inhumane procedure as they tried to put back the femur into place. Sadly, it did not work out. It was two hours by the time I received treatment.

Later, when the six-hour criterion had been met, full-anesthesia and relocation was performed. But to no avail. The head orthopedic doctor was called in. He ordered a CT scan. My another "first" that night. I suppose it must be around 1:00 AM. The report came in pronto. And the report was nothing short of a nightmare. I had suffered not only a femur dislocation, but also multiple fractures in the same bone. It was disastrous, really disastrous. And complicated. And shocking. And required major surgery within 24 hours.

My parents had been already informed of the dislocation. But not of the fractures or surgery. They left Mumbai at 4:00 AM and reached Pune by 7:00AM. And woe befell on them. The doctor explained the gravity of the situation. I couldn't be brought to Mumbai because the discharge, transfer and the whole procedure again would take lot of time.

Opened my eyes next morning to see my parents there. Gawd, the look on their face! So shocked and upset. The surgery was scheduled for 11:00 AM. But the implants or screws had not come in. After a slight delay, I was "transported" to the OT no. 4. Another "first".

The surgery and the recovery thereafter deserves a post of its own.

...To be continued.
